A black starry night, some people were playing soccer by the little moon light on a private pitch. Six total, boys it looked like from a distance. The pitch was placed half way between a marsh/swamp and a forest, marshy reeds to the North and West, while trees ran along the South and Eastern edges of the pitch. A warm July wind picked up from the North and the marshy reeds from the North bent towards the pitch; one of the boys turned and looked in the direction of the wind, getting tripped up by one of his buddies.
“Ayden we’re supposed to be here to practice! Dammit!” The boy that had tripped him up growled to him. “Let me guess you heard something, like always; guess I shouldn’t be surprised.” He offered out his hand/forearm to Ayden to help him up. The other boys had gathered around them in a circle to watch the two exchange words, even though they weren’t being quiet exactly.
“Yeah I did. Someone running, I couldn’t tell if it was towards or away from us. When I looked up I lost the sound. You tripping me didn’t help at all.” Ayden grabbed the other boy’s forearm and pulled himself up with the other’s help. “I’m gonna get you back for that bro.” He smiled and looked around for the ball, spotting it he took off as he shouted. “Illegal hit by Abel!” He joked, laughing as he pulled off his shirt and raced off with the ball towards the far goal. He kept it just in front of him so no one could really steal it from him.
Being the height of the heat wave in the middle of July and the boys had been running for a little while, the rest of them broke rank around the circle and pulled off their tank tops as well. Two of them going to join his team and three to go as defense against him, in the little moon light the boys’ chest shone white as they ran and practiced together, laughing as they discussed small trivial things occasionally.
“Hey Bryan! Heads up!” Abel called to one of the boys that was laughing and looking the other direction; he turned in time to head butt the ball to Abel and continued the drill. The laughing continued as the ball was suddenly kicked the length of the field. “Way to go Jaydon!” Abel growled, racing down the pitch against two other boys.
“Hey, yeah right. We all know how you love to show off Abel!” Jaydon said laughing as he jogged to the middle of the pitch.
Abel reached the ball in time and kicked it over to one of the two boys, “Down pitch!” He hissed, nodding towards the other and staying back slightly. “Sure whatever you say Jayd!” He shouted back.
“Oh shut up you two!” Ayden said, stealing the ball from his friend. Abel smiled, seeing his chance to get his brother back now for what he did earlier. They started to play much rougher now, till Ayden hit the ground with a thud. “What the he-“ Someone covered his mouth with their hand as everyone now stared at the path .
“Someone is coming…” The boy whispered into Ayden’s ear, “so be quiet.” He removed his hand from his mouth and helped him up, grabbing his forearm.
“Thanks Jasper.” Ayden said, turning and glaring at his brother. “Someone grab the shirts.”
Abel came over, “Sorry bro, had to stop you somehow…” He kicked the ball up, catching it in his hands, watching as Bryan’s brother ran and grabbed the shirts from the goal.
“Guys!” Jayd said warningly, but he didn’t need to finish. Everyone else could see the flash lights and hear the dogs also.
“Go!” Abel and Ayden hissed together, throwing Jasper the ball. “Now!” Bryan, Jasper, and Jaydon took off with Bryan’s brother just behind them. They disappeared into the trees on the South side of the pitch. “We stick together.” Mischievous smiles fell across their faces as they spoke in unison. “Let’s do this than bro.” They turned to the path were the people were coming from and Abel gave a shrill whistle. “Hey over here!” They yelled, turning and running to the East, jumping into the woods and disappearing from the sight of the pursers.
“Hey there they are! Loose the dogs!” Deep voices could be heard as feet ran across the pitch. Barking also issued behind them, Abel smiled. He glanced over at his brother, trees flying past both of them. He gave another shrill whistle as he found the fence of the property that enclosed the pitch. He scaled the nearest tree and jumped over, landing just seconds before Ayden.
“Ha, you’re slowing brother.” He joked and raced on, knowing that the dogs would try and get under the fence after them.
“Whatever you say, Old Abe.” They raced to Golden Tree Park, where they are all supposed to meet afterwards if they were chased out early.
“Damn you guys are late.” A shirt hits both Abel and Ayden in the face.
“Oh shut it Byron,” They said together, jumping him and giving him a good noogie. “It’s not like we didn’t have dogs on our butts. Nor have to take the long way. Nor have to wait for the slow pokes to show up.”
Bryan finally stepped in to save his brother from them tearing his head completely off. “Yeah, yeah. We’re thankful too…” He added with an annoyed tone as his brother rubbed his head gently. They were gathered around a jungle gym. Bryan jumped back up on the enclosed slide and stared up at the sky.
Jaydon and Jasper looked at each other before laughing. The clung to the tree that they had situated themselves in, hanging upside down by their knees, “You guys really need counseling.” They said together.
“Oh, look who’s talking. The brothers that kidnapped us when we were younger, locking us in a closet at school.” Bryan and Byron responded. Jasper threw the ball at Bryan, who caught it and threw it to Ayden.
“All four of you need counseling.” Abel and Ayden chimed in. Suddenly everyone started laughing, that’s what the whole nightly romping was about, playing together and getting away for a bit.
“Sure, sure, it’s two in the morning. Now what are we going to do? A bunch of insomniacs can’t just go home and sleep.” Bryan and Byron spoke up. Six heads turned to the side walk as a couple walked by staring at them.
“It’s creepy when people do that, you know?” They were looking at the boys, referring to how they talked in unison.
“Sorry if we creep you out folks!” Abel and Ayden said loudly together, causing the couple to start walking faster. The six boys started to laugh, giving each other high fives. The ball was thrown up and they started to play some more, not realizing how fast time was actually flying by.
Jasper and Jaydon checked their phones, “Shit!” they swore together, “We have to get home. Mom catches us sneaking in again she’ll lock us in our rooms chained to the bed.” They grabbed their shirts and draped them around their necks.
“Bet Abigail and Allyson would love that.” Abel and Ayden called after them, laughing at the thought a little.
“Shut it you two.” The brothers yelled back, having disappeared out of sight. Bryan and Byron were laughing too hard at how those two obeyed their girlfriends every whim it seemed.
“Better head home then too, good thing your mom let you stay over.” Abel smiled, head butting the ball forward towards Ayden, who caught it.
“I think that’s enough for one night.” He smiled and grabbed his shirt, heading towards the park exit. Abel followed, having draped his shirt over his neck and grabbing a hold of each end. He suddenly jumped as a snap rang out.
“What the-“ He turned around to see Jaydon ringing his shirt, while Jasper was farther behind him. He knew that Jaydon did it without having to ask. “You jerk.” He jump at him, trying to get him by the neck, but Jaydon seemed able to avoid him. “Arrg! I’ll get you back and you know it.”
“Yeah, yeah,” He had gotten on the other side of Jasper, and was able to use him for a shield for the moment.
“Bro, get up here…” Ayden was several feet in front of them, he was getting annoyed with them in back. Abel growled under his breath at Jaydon turning to go to his brother.
“Yeah you get up there.” Jaydon said, pushing his luck as far as it would go.
“You’re lucky I let you use me as protection, dingbat.” Jasper said, hitting his brother on the forehead. “Got him for ya Abel!”
Abel waved his hand back at the two behind him, “Let me guess, don’t let him annoy me like that. It also annoys you. I know, I know, that’s why we’re friends with them though.” They were on their street to their house now and the four of them made no noise now. The dogs down the block barked, just as they jumped the fence into their backyard. They got in the house easily without a problem, and to the basement living room where they were supposed to have been sleeping. Two cats came up and brushed against Abel and Ayden’s legs. “Hey Alex.”
“Hey Khan.” Ayden said, both brothers bending down to pick up the cats. Jaydon and Jasper shook their heads, Jasper reaching over and turning on the lights.
“Oh hey…” The two of them chimed, they dropped the cats and looked in shock as in front of them sat their mother. “Um…yeah…” They scratched the back of their heads, looking at each other for some sort of way out.
“You could tell me where you have been this entire time!” Her voice was stern as she stared at the four boys over her glasses. “Just tell me, and then I’ll deal with it in the morning.” The wariness was evident in her voice. They guessed her up all night after finding them gone.
They glanced at each other, “Golden Tree Park practicing soccer on the pitch there. We couldn’t sleep.” They were in unison again and their mother was used to it. She shrugged of how it sounded.
“You could have left a note then…” She gave a sigh, “I’ve been up since midnight worrying.” She gave an anxious growl, making the boys cringe.“What if something had happened to you! What was I to tell their parents!” She pointed to Jasper and Jaydon. “Least let me know where you are going! How long you’re going to be gone! If you’re ever coming back!” She broke down now and started to cry.
The four boys stopped cringing and looked on as Abel and Ayden’s mother started to cry. Her son’s went to comfort her, “We’re sorry…” They gave her a hug, helping her up. “Here we’ll take you to bed.” They took her up the stairs and put her to bed again, waiting till she fell asleep and it didn’t take long.
Abel and Ayden exchanged a silent conversation in front of their guests. Finally they turned and said,”Sorry about that, she’s just protective of us and afraid of the night.” Everything they said was true, they weren’t going to mention anything more about it either.
Abel walked over to a closet and pulled out some towels. “You know where the shower is, go take one. Doesn’t matter who showers first.” He sighed and flopped down onto the floor with a loud noise. Jaydon looked at his brother, before walking off down the hall and to take a shower.
Ayden shook his head and looked at Jasper, mouthing, “He just lost an argument, so don’t ask.” He flopped down in a chair next to Jasper. He turned on the television and grabbed up two Xbox 360 controllers, giving one to Jasper.
“What you got in?” He asked, grabbing up the controller and looking down at Abel before looking back at the television.
“Call of Duty: World at War,” The reply was very plain as he quickly accessed the online multiplayer. “Ready to get your butt kicked.” A playful growl came from the two boys as they picked their teams and started to play. They argued back and forth, claiming who was the better at the game. Abel rolled his eyes and rolled over onto his stomach, grabbing the nearest sketch pad and starting to draw. Jaydon came back from the shower, a towel wrapped around his waist.
He shook his head at the sight, “Lost an argument then, did you Abel?” He was standing next to his bag, digging through it and laughing at Abel. “Give it up and go shower, maybe you’ll warm up. Or give Jazzlyn a call when you get, or before you get in. Whichever suits you two better.” He pulled out some shorts and pulled them on. “Here, go call her we all know she wants to hear from you. Oh look at that, a missed call.” Abel’s cell phone was thrown at him and hit him in the shoulder.
“Ow, jerk!” He rubbed his shoulder, snatching up his phone. “Sick, that is what you are Jaydon.” He rolled his eyes and pushed up off the floor. “I think I’ll just take a shower.” He hissed, closing the sketch pad. He walked out of the room, ripping a towel out of the closet.
“So what you two argue ‘bout?” Jaydon and Jasper asked together as Jaydon joined in on the game.
“Nothing to major, just…never mind…I shouldn’t mention it. It’s from our childhood, well before we met.” Ayden shook his head, mumbling to himself. “Shouldn’t have mentioned it…”
The brothers looked at each other and shrugged, suddenly they shouted, “Hey! How you do that?!” Both of them had been shot and killed on the game at the same time.
“I’m just that good…actually, I didn’t do that. Someone else must have…Abel…” His eyes squinted and her paused, racing out of the room.
“This is going to be good.” Jaydon and Jasper looked at each other, racing after Ayden. They ran up two flights of stairs and into Ayden. “Ow, why aren’t you wailing on him?”
“Besides the fact that his door is locked and he isn’t in the shower…hm I wonder?” He turned and stared at Jaydon. “You are the one that suggested this…” He started to mumble under his breath as he walked back down stairs, “Didn’t need to see that…”
“Ayden we’re supposed to be here to practice! Dammit!” The boy that had tripped him up growled to him. “Let me guess you heard something, like always; guess I shouldn’t be surprised.” He offered out his hand/forearm to Ayden to help him up.
