It was just starting to get dark outside and Mercy was sitting in the kitchen of the apartment with Jacob in his height chair. She was sitting in one of the chairs, facing Jacob and feeding him from the baby food jar.
She was wearing a pair of black short shorts and a purple tank top. She didn't have any shoes or socks on and she had her dark brown hair pulled up into a ponytail. Jacob was in a pair of jeans and a gray shirt with a pair of black and white socks and a bib around his neck, covered with baby food. His green eyes had a happy gleam in them as his mother fed him.
Mercy smiled at her son, making sure he got as much of the food actually into his mouth as possible. After this it would be a bath and then bed time... hopefully. The phone rang and Mercy hopped out of the chair, setting down the baby food and the dish towel she had been using to help keep this a clean event.
She picked up the phone and held it between her ear and shoulder, rinsing her hands off in the sink. "Hello?" she said, glancing over at Jake every so often. She frowned as she heard the voice on the other end. It was her uncle... again.
Gritting her teeth in anger, Mercy turned away from the baby and listened to what he had to say. He wanted to see her. She hadn't told her uncle anything since she hadn't really talked to him since she was a little girl. She use to write letters to him as a child, but that abruptly stopped as a sense of understanding had come to her. He didn't know where she lived... at least as far as she knew. He had no idea about Tyler or Jabob either and she wanted to keep it that way. She didn't trust him.
"No," she said to him plainly, her hand on her hip as she stood in the kitchen. He started to go on about how he had changed and yada yada yada. Mercy just shook her head and leaned against the fridge, hanging up on him. She closed her gray eyes tightly and sank to the floor for a moment, gripping the phone tightly as she put her forehead against her knees.
A giggle from Jacob snapped her out of it and she looked up at him, the look on her face softening. He had spit out the food she had last shoveled into his mouth and was now smearing it around the tray of the height chair. It was all over him now, on his face, in his hair. Actually, he had reached the jar as well and had spilled it over onto the tray as well.
Mercy got to her feet as Jake started to bang the messy spoon on the tray before dropping it. He leaned over and watched it clatter onto the floor, the baby food splattering with it. The look on his face warmed Mercy's heart as he looked from the spoon to her, his mouth in the shape of an O.
With a laugh, Mercy picked up the spoon and put it in the sink before she started to wipe Jake off with the dish towel. "Yucky," she said to him, making a face and then smiling as her baby attempted to repeat her word. She wiped off his hands and face, laughing at his expression.
