((this is a true story...with some slight alterations...))
There they sat in his car together. They had been working on a school project together. He was behind the wheel looking at her, waiting for her to speak. She would open her mouth and look at him, only to shut it and turn away. His effect on her was horrible; she couldn’t look at him and say what she needed to say. He was her best friend and she had fallen in love with him, now what was she to do… She sighed, “I-“. The words wouldn’t come as he continued to watch her. “JJ, I-I need to know where we stand together?” She finally managed to get the words out, and turned to look at him, her face solemn and depressed.
“I don’t think I follow you?” JJ simply replied, his face said he was lost and she figured that. “I mean, Chelz, we’re only friends and what else is there?” She hated this, everyone she knew in the school asked her if they were going out, or just assumed. As a couple of their teachers put it, they were ‘partners in crime’.
She sighed again and turned to stare out the windshield. “There’s always what everyone thinks of us. A couple, and I know we’re just friends, but in all truth, we act like a couple. Even Mrs. Ludwig and Mrs. Hubbard think that, hell, even your soccer coach thinks that. Though I don’t think he likes me.” She mumbled the last part and looked at the floor of his car. “I’m tired of telling people no…not that I want to tell them yes, but I want them to stop asking.” She couldn’t look at him, there were tears welling up in her eyes. She sniffed and rubbed them dry. She finally looked up at him, in control of her emotions again, though her eyes were blood shot.
Silence ensued for a while before JJ spoke, “So what is it that you want?” He seemed to be picking his words very carefully. “Do you want this to stop? O-“ She cut him off.
“No…I-I, just no. I don’t want this to stop.” She couldn’t help herself she needed him. “I really want…a label I guess.” A stray tear slid down her cheek as she looked at him. “I guess I want to be…” She choked on the words for a few seconds, having to turn away. He was getting to her again, she hated effect yet at the same time had a hard time coping without it. The words came out, “boyfriend and girlfriend.” She couldn’t look up or at him even she knew his answer already.
He sat there stunned before he finally responded. “You know I can’t do that…” His voice was soft, yet low – very normal for him. “I’m not allowed to date. Also I’m busy with my family.”
“I just want the label and do you honestly think I have any free time? I’m only asking for what we already have. No more.” She stopped to think for a second, she had gone from depressed to angry in six words that came out of his mouth. She had the sudden urge to kiss him, oh how she truly hated the effect that he had on her. Along with the hold, she would do basically anything he asked, just shy of killing someone or herself. “Have you ever had a girlfriend?” Her words sounded dangerous, he could tell.
“Sort of…people thought me and another girl were together because we were friends. That was back in fourth grade. Since then my parents have been saying, ‘No dating,’ or ‘You need to focus on school first.’” He just continued to watch her as he gave her the question. “What about you?”
She wasn’t ready for this question, but just shook her head. “Never, I always end up a just a friend.” She had to look away, it had choked her to say it, but it was very true. She had been friend to so many guys, but that was it. She had only been just friends, she felt like it wasn’t right or fair. But then again, when are things ever fair? “You don’t have to tell your parents.” She looked up at him, her eyes watery.
“I can’t just, not tell them. Brain will, besides I’m never free on weekends or during the summer.” He just watched her, offering no comfort cause that was what had gotten him in this predicament anyways. “I enjoy being with my family. My parents don’t drink.” He didn’t realize what he had said till it was too late. She had turned away and had actually started to cry silently. He moved closer and tried to make it right, though he didn’t know how to comfort her. “Chelsey…That’s not what I meant. Please…”
She waved him off, “Just cause my parents drink when we have fun, doesn’t mean anything. Yes, they drink every time that we have fun and that’s mostly the only time we have fun. It doesn’t mean you have to bring it up.” She looked at him as her voice was warning danger to him. Tears were still going down her cheek. “It wasn’t right, nor do you have the right…”
“Chelsey, I’m sorry.” He sat back, trying to stay safe. She wasn’t under his effect anymore he had said something wrong; for he didn’t know how extensively she actually hated drinking.
“I only brought the subject up cause it’s nearly prom. I thought about going, but I won’t go unless I’m going with someone. I’d like to go with you, but I doubt that you’ll go so I seem to have wasted my time.” She looked away at the end, trying to hold onto being free from his effect. It slipped from her grasp and she once again felt a strong desire to kiss him. She looked over at him; he didn’t know what was going on.
“I-“ He was cut off as she had leaned across his front seat and tried to kiss him. Last second he turned his cheek to her and got a kiss there. He just stared at her like ‘what-are-you-doing?’ it was probably a good question to ask, but she didn’t respond to the look.
Chelsey shook her head and stared at him, “Please…” She didn’t need to say more. He knew what she was asking for. He gave in. She gently touched his cheek and gave him a soft kiss on his lips. She sat back in her seat and just looked at him.
He stared at her and finally asked one word. “Why?” She growled at him silently and got of the car.
“Why do you think?!” She got into her car and took off. She was pissed, as she drove away from him in a blind rage. ‘Why?’ ‘Why?’ His single question kept repeating over and over in her head. He should know why, she just told him basically! She stopped and parked her car off to the side of the road. “GAH! Best friends weren’t made for this!” She started to cry; she was there for some time, till her mother called her wondering if she was all right and coming home. Chelsey managed to collect herself and sound perfectly fine over the phone. She went home and refused to talk to anyone, hiding in her room. The next day she acted like nothing had happened, or close to...
